La Route des Cols Tour

La Route des Cols tour is a 6 day tour, consisting of 4 days of cycling with a travel day either side. It has been designed for cyclists who want to tackle some of the notable Cols and routes of the Pyrenees in a short period of time. It also provides a training opportunity for those who want to take part in a Raid Pyrenean at a later date or wanting to take part in a local Cyclosportive.

The tour starts from our accommodation, heading south towards Foix and Tarascon sur Ariege. From Tarascon we pick up la Route des Cols, cycling east to west over 4 days, stopping off at Seix, Bagneres de Luchon, Luz St Sauveur and finishing at the foot of the Col d’Aubisque in the spa village of Eaux Bonnes. Grading:  Challenging/hard and designed for regular riders, club riders and fit sportsmen/women.

Day 1. Arrive. Pick up and transfer from Toulouse airport to our accommodation. Assemble bikes and prepare for the tour. There should be time to take a spin along local routes to stretch the legs and check your bike is sound.

Day 2.
Route: Le Fossat – Seix /Oust (Via Tarascon sur Ariege, Vicdessos, Aulus Les Bains)
A steady ride down to Tarascon sur Ariege, ensures a good warm up and an even pace before we turn into the mountains. From Tarascon onward, we are on La routes des cols, so the pace changes as we find an even tempo in order to tackle our first few cols.

Distance: 72 miles /116 km
Time: 6 – 7 hrs (approx)

Day 3.
Route:  Seix / Oust-Bagneres du Luchon. (Via Castillon en Couserans, St Lary, St Beat, in/out of Spain)
Setting off for another big day in the mountains. All 4 cols are over 1,000 m and provide some excellent climbing opportunities, preparing you for the following day. En route, we also take the opportunity to bag the Col du Portillon (1320m), via a little “sortie” into Spain.

Day 4. 
Route: Bagneres du Luchon-Luz St. Sauveur. (Via Bourdere-Louron, Arreau, St Marie de Campan, and La Mongie, Bareges)
A day of big cols, the smallest being 1489 m, rising to the mighty Tourmalet at 2115 m high. It is the day you have been preparing yourself for and it will take all your physical and mental reserves to finish this epic sporting challenge. At the end, there will be some very tired legs but happy cyclists who have just completed an impressive personal achievement that will remain with them for a long time. At the end of the day we will drive onto Eaux Bonnes for the night.

Day 4. La route des cols, Athos, Porthos & Aramis climb again

Day 5.
Route: Luz St. Sauveur – Eaux Bonnes. (Via Argeles Gazost – Aucun – Arrens Marsous – Eaux bonnes)
Today is an opportunity to finish off La route des Cols at a more gentle pace and really enjoy taking in two of the most notable cols in the Pyrenees, Col de Solour and Col D’Aubisque, both steeped in the history of the TdeF. At the foot of the Aubisque we will stop at the village of Eaux Bonnes and sample the mineral waters with a spa and have lunch to celebrate your achievements of the last 4 days. Following lunch, we head back to our accommodation where the tour finishes*.

Time:  3.5 – 4 hrs (approx)

*Travel note:
If you need  to finish the tour after our decent from Col d’Aubisque, there will be a single transfer to Pau or Tarbes/Lourdes airport.

We will not try to get the afternoon flights from Toulouse (before 18:00) as there is a risk of missing them.  If there are later flights in the evening from Toulouse, we can arrange to get you to the airport. Otherwise, we will return to our accommodation and go to the airport the following morning.

Day 6. Depart.  Breakfast after breakfast fort transfers to Toulouse, Blagnac airport.
